Impact of Generic Reforms on Spain Pharma Industry

Data from the IMS covering the 12-month period ending December 2012 shows generic drugs accounted for 67.1% of the total prescription market by volume in Spain as against just 8.7 percent in 2010. In terms of value generic comprised  39.6% of said market value. There has been manifold expansion in penetration of generics just within a gap of 3 years.

As a result of generic penetration, data from the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality shows that in January 2013, public pharmaceutical expenditure in Spain experienced a drop of - 13%, compared to the same month the previous year.
